Doña Ana County Firefighter I Academy

New volunteer firefighters who are not already certified must attend the Doña Ana County Firefighter I Academy. The academy was implemented in 2010 to ensure that all responders engaging on emergency scenes in the County are properly trained to perform their duties.

Academies are offered several times a year, based on current training needs. Participants receive entry level firefighter training in accordance with NFPA 1001, the Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications.

Academy classes are presented in a lecture based format along with hands-on activities and practical skills and runs seven consecutive weeks, usually two weekday nights and a Saturday, or Saturday and Sunday.

Topics include the History of Fire Service, Fire Department Communications, the Incident Command System, Fire Behavior, Firefighter Safety, Firefighter Tools and Equipment, Search and Rescue, Fire Attack, and more. Participants are challenged physically and mentally, throughout the academy to prepare them well for the exciting position of Volunteer Firefighter.

At the conclusion of the academy, successful participants receive Doña Ana County Firefighter I certification, which enables them to begin responding to emergencies and serves as a prerequisite for advanced training, such as Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, IFSAC Firefighter I and II, Vehicle Extrication, Driver/Operator, and others.

There is no limit to the amount of training a volunteer firefighter can receive.  It often paves the way to obtaining a position as a career firefighter with Doña Ana County Fire and Rescue Services.
